Compulsively expressing ourselves - millions of us.

And with Twitter - it's moment-by-moment, mood, just tiny phrases-ful of notions - and it's quite addictive!

It seems we can all be summed up in tiny sound-bytes.

Just a nuance, a nano-sentence needed to sum us up.

On Twitter, only a sentence to sum up one's whole self - one's life.

Fragmented, shattered, streamlined, and that's what we all are - in the end, at least - on our tombstones, if we're lucky enough to have one - it might read only stats, like name, and dates between which we'd once existed.

Meanwhile, we live between the fragments flung outward into the internetted abyss for whomever to view, to care, to share, observe, judge, like, dislike, follow, take up, drop, commiserate, and so on - but mainly in order to self-promote.

Everyone's selling something, even if only ideas - peddling maybe only thoughts - like bubbles - popping off to no one and to everyone at once.

Who's listening? No one. We're all too busy expressing ourselves.

It seems.

It's a Dark Day In America - Human Birth Rates Top Record

Human Overpopulation Becomes Even More Unmanageable

Today is a day of mourning.

Mourning for all the people who will die as a consequence - most of them children, babies, for the places that will become deserts due to tree-felling, for the water, now clear, that will soon become rank. Today, the announcement has come that human overpopulation in America has reached the mark of that of the height of the baby booming year of 1957, meaning that we are now, officially, spiraling very quickly downward toward hellish life conditions and world destruction - UNLESS - and only unless - most start to opt-out of breeding. I have. I have taken the Child-Free Pledge to stay child-free and/or adopt. I can't understand why we, at this point in our history, are not, if not outright ostracizing and even throwing things, at least draping the homes in black of people who choose to have more babies in a world that is overrun by human overpoulation already.

In a world where most children starve every day of their lives worldwide, suffer untold misery in their short lives, and wish that someone in a developed nation would adopt them.

This is so sad - sad for us - if you think you feel crowded now, look out - watch as every year churns out even more drivers on the road, even more self-centeredness, even more desperation, even more rudeness, and all the other negatives that overpoulation always brings.

Get ready for dire weather warnings, due to the turmoil of ever-growing, ever-advancing stampedes of people grabbing land, tearing down trees, and spoiling the waterways - after all - our planet is our only nest, and you know what you're not supposed to do in your own nest, right ?

But just being alive is going to make sewage, make despoilation, make pollution grow.

And one child in a developed nation usurps the energy and resources that literally thousands of children use up in undeveloped nations.

So do not rejoice when you hear of someone's pregnancy.

Ask them instead, "How could you? Are you really that uncaring a person ?"

Then ask them, "Do you have ample - and I mean very ample - resources to keep that child in case you can't work, die, or break up with your support ? Because why should we- as a society - pick up the check for your unbridled selfishness ?"

Then ask your government - "Please take out tax penalties on people who breed. "

And get active.

Stay child-free if you are so lucky.

Date only those guys who are cool enough to get a vasectomy.

If you do make a mistake, own up to it. Do the right thing. (Don't think of abortion - let someone adopt your kid.)

Use at LEAST two forms of contraception at all times, and do not drink while on a date. Stay lucid.

And adopt by all means, if you can or if you feel a need to parent.

And wake up others to the realities of life now - not of life two thousand years ago !

Anti-Rand Rant - Ayn Rand, There Is No Virtue In Selfishness

OK. 

Having watched the Colbert Report, and realized that there are actually nut-cases out there who think that the weirdo, repressed he-woman, Ayn Rand, had any points at all, except those in her brain-damaged head, I have to weigh in on this.

There is no virtue in selfishness. Well, there is to the evil among us, but in civilized society, among the moral, the religious, the sane, the normal people, caringness for everyone takes precedence.

Rand was an embittered woman, unappealing, most likely attempting to gain the attention of a remote father, or to be the son he'd wanted, a twisted person who, in the time of great national suffering, during which, as now, there were not enough jobs or resources for most people, she would smugly decide that others didn't deserve anything - a dog-eat-dogism - and that the successful ( oh, please, don't resurrect the old God pre-ordained blessings on his chosen thing! ), merely work harder...where is concern for others ? Has the human overpopulation crisis already caused this level of hatred for the under-productive ? 

Which brings us to the point about which all this Ayn Randism has been dug out of a moldering grave to prop up the conservatives' notions about unfairness to them - the Obama campaign to bail out the mortgage holders. After all, who else do they have who would openly espouse selfishness as a virtuous thing to endorse (except for the odious pustule named Rush Limbaugh )? Why else would the hyper-conventional (they all dress alike ) Conservatives come out en masse for this extremely odd and subversive female writer ? Ordinarily they'd shun her like they would all other bohemian types!

First of all - if you own your own home, you're not desperate.

Why not help the ones who really need it? The renters?

These home-owners - many of whom heeded those stupid late-night ads and land-grabbed to the tune of, as in my neighbor's case, owning in excess of hundreds of rental properties - are not the desperate ones. I cannot tell you how many vacant homes I see every day in the beach areas. The Bush-men had given tax breaks to the greedy ones who wanted not one but TWO homes - and why not force these second homes to be offered (at a Federally-mandated low rate ) as rental properties for those who need homes?

This is a bail out to stabilize the banks, and the middle-grubbers in between them and the consumers, the mortgage industry creeps. The bottom-feeders who have the nerve to look down upon workers - whose industries have been closed down or moved to other countries ! Where is the sympathy and help for them ? The American Worker doesn't even have unions any more!

Oh, where is F.D.R. when we need him again ? Would that he, like Arthur, could return - but NOT Ayn Rand!

I, like many who voted Obama in, am not thrilled about many things the new administration is doing, but this is a move that should have the Repubs clicking their collective (Fascist) heels together!

It's giving money to the banks, essentially, which may or may not get to them if it's given to homeowners instead.

This could be good for stabilizing the economy, but it will do nothing to help the ones who sorely need help in this economy - those without jobs, without homes, renters, and so on.

I just cannot cry over those who own homes when so many others, less advantaged, are in trouble.

Why not choose another novelist to quote ? Let's go for Steinbeck now, at least, since he cared about the ordinary man - the masses - the disenfranchised - the elderly - the hungry kids - the single parents - the less-abled -  the poor.

So do I.

Questing itself is seen by some as irreligious, and yet, God, being immense as He is, must understand our need to know Him, and can't we learn more about our universal home and still be faithful to our beliefs ?

Writers and Writing - Article by Ocean

 Most of us write something on something. Even if it’s raging graffiti or just angsty scribblings of expression or even stick-figuring to let your feelings vent most of us write. Even to stab at the ground with a twig is writing. Or even air writing to trace the stars at night. We primates are fingery and holdy about things in our fingers and our fingers are the routes out from the triggers fired off in the brain, so… don’t let anyone tell you he or she doesn’t write. We all do.

 And even before “writing” was invented, we wrote and talked and these noises and vocalizations somehow meandered through eternity fueled by our emotions and found a way out through those limbs down to the old fingers and the famous opposing thumb. Alphabets aside, thinking in words and pictures are the same thing since words stand in for both emotions and for pictures for places and events and for imaginary worlds and airy inventions that haven’t found creation yet.

 Writing is cool, essentially.All animals do it but maybe not as formally as we do.We’ve compartmentalized ourselves into a neat little package of beliefs that are unsubstantiated where we’re always the center of everything. The other animals sit around and wonder at it, I’m sure.

 Anyway, they all express themselves to. Throwing coconuts down onto a meanie’s head is as much writing as is a headline of the New York Times. Head-butting just as much writing as War and Peace.  And a crow squawking on a fence is as much writing as is 50-cent giving out with diatribes as is the Guernica as is Woody Guthrie twanging as is Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises.

 Degrees are the only difference and I just mean – open your mind and notice what a weird thing writing really is, and how cool.

 That a feeling can find it’s way to being into the mind and clothe itself in a made-up picture and into a thought and into a word and into a way to communicate that word.

 Writing is the way out of a lot of things. The pen is mightier than the sword and so many wars and revolutions have been started with just a little written dynamite that the power of the word really speaks for itself – and loudly. Or softly.

 Even though people who never learn to read have way better memories than those who learn to depend on written words, reading still bestows a wealth of experience – a way of mind-reading and time-traveling and understanding that few of the ones who still don’t know how to read would not envy.

 To wield the pencil is to hold power in one’s hand, but to make abstract symbols on paper come alive is quite another thing. The magi among us, the shamans and shamanesses like, for instance, Toni Morrison, who’s captivating power of words ensnared me when I first picked up one of her books somewhere and read only a few lines can literally create worlds through words. Words that  literally climbed out of the page and coalesced into a vine, a living thing, strung with colors and images and wound themselves around my mind and my soul. She is a master.

 There are only a few real masters in, of, any element, and their charisma and skill is well beyond that of ordinary mortals.I want to commend them here. To honor and applaud them and to turn you onto them. Beware their wicked spells, because they really are capable of awesome things.

 Something is at work in our universe that grows out of a certain type of fecundity of spirit. Great writers and other artists have this and it’s far more than mere talent. And works have their own lives to lead. They express themselves. Who knows? Maybe they choose their own vehicles and not the other way around. It certainly feels that way at times.

 I like to write songs, but really, I compose music, and the melodies just sort of create themselves - they just appear in my mind.  And the lytics, too, sort of create themselves and I merely give them expression. Writing is fun on subjects I enjoy, and I don’t include myself in this secret tribe of shamen, by the way, and I advocate it for everyone. We can’t all be geniuses but thankfully we can all enjoy their artistry. I’m going to have this page for links to writings and info on some masters I really admire.

 I’ve gone into other worlds and have been transformed by the magic of many of these writers, so…I’d like to share the secrets of their existence with you. Some are ultra-famous still, others more obscure. I may not keep up with every writer on the new horizons but whenever a book falls into my hand, or an article, and when it begins a life of its’ own, unbidden, I know I’ve stumbled again upon a magician, so..

 I have so many favorite authors – too many to name, but I’ll spotlight a few here. Some are enormously known and some need to be recognized more.Every life is an adventure, and some of these heroes of mine led amazingly interesting lives. Without that sense of adventure, who’d want to read their ideas anyway ?

 The tedious lists of people writing even best-sellers who know absolutely nothing about life don’t interest me any more than do the makers of recipe films or music. In this day of blogdom, everyone writes who can grab onto a laptop. It’s no great feat to string words together in imitative ways or through formulas learned at school.The geniuses still exist, though, who can stir the blood of people seated in easy chairs.This gift is still a marvel, and I’ll focus on the ones I think should be applauded as I continue to find more heroes to exalt in this little Pantheon of mine.

It's Only Valentine's Now, So Why Am I Already Having Spring Fever ?

It's in the cosmic atmosphere.

I can just feel it.

Spring is on the way !

Even when, as I usually do, living in the tropics or in the sub-tropics at least, a type of Winter exists, but it's really more than whether the weather has behaved well or not, more than the cold factor - it's our planetary connection to the seasons, to the turning of our own orb, to the placement of the moon - at night, now, I can hardly sleep - the full moon has been reflected in my pool outside, and the double glow of moon and mirror has been so intense, plus the countless reflections of the sea, just outside - I sleep with the curtains drawn - I must know the night sky and the stars are in view - has made the most beauteous flourescent violet light !

So, just lying around and sighing, like some Romantic poet, has been my reaction of late, to the impossibly gorgeous days, with butterflies flitting around each other in circles, couples, in love, talking intimately, no doubt, about how wonderful life is, and newborn leaves coming in, and night-blooming jasmine spreading its' irrepressable charms through a perfume that lures us outside just to breathe it in heady draughts ! What must it do to the moths ?

Night and day, the spells cast by the early Spring is almost too much to bear !

Errands ? Put 'em off!

Chores ? For bores !

Just lying in the clover, gazing up at fleecy clouds is enough - for now.

Soon, the reckless, tumbling tumult of full Springtime will arrive, and even at a far off coast, I'll be thinking of the roar of mountain streams, rushing down through valleys and meadows of tender wildflowers, strewn in enormous blankets, along Colorado's hillsides, of buttercups emerging in wild fields all over the South, of Nesturtiums covering my homeland of California.

I miss it all. Does God use his power like I would ? Does He walk, unnoticed, among each and every country, enjoying His every flower - every field - every tree in blossom ?

Travel is the best we'll ever do. Traveling, and remembering.

Appreciate every day !

As my eldest Brother has reminded me - count the handsful of seasons you have had, and will have, if you're lucky. 

They're very few.

Some have the mistaken notion that to care for other animals is to not care about human animals.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
To care for all animals is to be compassionate. To be compassionate is to be Vegan, to o nly eat Compassionate foods.
To be Compassionate saves human lives from starving!
It's the ultimate win-win situation! 
To heal the whole of the planet, to save human lives, and to save animal o nes at the same time as we're healing our own individual bodies and spirits is to be spiritual!
All the same!

Human Rights are Allied with All Other Animal Rights

We haven't yet seen many articles having the human rights subject, 
and yet all of us are animals.

At heart, the issues all lead to the same thing - compassion is the only cure.

The animal rights activists stand very firmly on the compassionate 
issues for human beings too.

To be compassionate is to extend that compassion to every being, including 
those of our own specie.

We are all one.

There are many, many organizations that help humans - although none is doing enough. However - at the same time that they help, most are helping in ways that will not sustain nurturance of these hungry populations or change things, 
and they are doing so using cruelty measures that introduce even more problems and continue to ruin the planet's environmental systems.

We must stand up for many different issues all at once. Win-win situations heal.

We, as an animal rights activists, combine all of the compassionate measures into o ne overall healing measure, into o ne world plan.

The drive toward Ecoizing , toward Veganizing, toward Spiritualizing, and 
toward Humanizing is all the same drive, when viewed clearly.

The cure for the entire planet is compassion.

How? How does it lead to saving the starving people in Africa?

Compassion lets us understand that all these issues are vitally related:

Human Overpopulation

Solution - Being Child-Free and/or Adopting 

Ecological Issues

Solution - Veganizing

Spiritual Issues

Solution - Veganizing, Being Child-Free and/or Adopting

Health Issues 

Solution - Veganizing

How will these intertwine and save the world and suffering of all animals, including humans?

Eating compassionate foods means reclaiming the land now used for grazing by the meat industry, and farming grains and vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds organically.

Stopping pesticides and grazing and halting the meat industry will stop huge amounts of air, water, and land pollution, and growing grain can easily feed everyone o n earth.

Eating and living compassionately heals not only the spirit, but creates 
sanity and receptivity in the mind and the emotions, supplying adequate nutrition,
vitamins, and all the requirements of health for humanity.

This spirituality will open the doors to great rapport between nations and 
individuals of different cultures, and we will find solutions that bridge 
the gaps beteen the haves and the have-nots.

Adopting rather than bearing children will not o nly create a human population 
that the planet can live with, but it will create a spiritual enlightenment 
among people, and will take care of all the children that are now starving 
in the world.

Education and adequate birth control will help tremendously.

Vasectomies should be rewarded and popularized, for instance.

To do more than a band-aid-like gesture, and something to make the developed nations feel good, extreme changes will be necessary.

Every year, there is great need in many regions of the world for the human 
populations, and the Western nations, who traditionally used to send grain, 
now do not have the grain to send, due to the fact that the meat industry 
has taken over the land, the commerce, and the culture, and not enough people 
demonstrate that they care.

Also, as the humans continue to overpopulate, and as disease casualties continue to rise, those in the more stable areas continue to embrace apathy.

The problems are immense.

The cures are enormously challenging, and yet, if we do actually love humanity, the world, the other species, and ourselves, we will need to start right now 
to change the world, and choose to be Compassionate with our food!
